Management Consultant Peter Drucker is often quoted as saying that you can’t manage what you can’t measure. This quote has been used for years by many consultants, including me. While the statement rings true, is it actually saying what we think?

Drucker stated that “You can’t know whether or not you are successful unless success is defined and tracked with a clearly established metric for success (Data) you can analyse (Insights), and fine-tune your processes to produce the desired outcome (Change)”.

 Without clear objectives, you’re stuck in a constant state of guessing”.

This is how we see the automotive industry. There is a huge amount of data measured across the industry, but often we do little with it. Remember:

 “If nothing changes, everything stays the same”.

What are you measuring in your business, and does it help you set achievable targets? Have you reached your full potential?

There is a fundamental need to understand the data you are measuring, why you are measuring it, and what you are going to do with the results.

Data – Insights – Change 

This is apd Australia’s maxim. It is the connection between measurement, management, and improvement.

As a management team, ask yourself if you are providing your staff with structured, meaningful feedback that shows the direct relationship between the following:
